How to check an unfamiliar web shop in two minutes before you type your card number - domain age, payment methods, and the copy-paste tells.

An ad on Instagram or TikTok, a shop you've never heard of, brand names at prices that make you stop scrolling.

Short answer: most shops that look like this never ship anything. Some send a cheap fake; some take your card number and use it elsewhere; most just take the money. They cost about $50 to set up and last a few weeks, which is why the domain is always new.

The two-minute check

  1. Domain age. Paste the shop's address into Scamed - it looks up the registration date. A shop "established 2009" on a domain registered six weeks ago is lying about at least one thing.
  2. Payment methods. Card and PayPal give you chargeback rights. If the shop pushes bank transfer, crypto, Zelle, or "friends & family", or gives a discount for them, that's the whole scam: those payments can't be reversed.
  3. Contact page. A real business has a physical address you can find on a map, a phone number, and a company registration number (required by law in the EU and UK). A Gmail address and a contact form is not a business.
  4. The text. Search a sentence from the "About us" page in quotes. Scam shops copy it from other scam shops, and you'll find the same paragraph on twenty sites.
  5. Reviews elsewhere. Search the shop's name plus "scam" or "reviews". Trustpilot pages full of one-line five-star reviews posted on the same day are fake; a total absence of reviews for a shop claiming years of business is worse.

More tells

  • Countdown timers and "only 3 left" on every product.
  • Brand products at prices below wholesale. Nobody sells a $600 Dyson for $89.
  • The site name doesn't match the domain (Nordic Home at shop-deals-2024.com).
  • Product photos with other shops' watermarks.

What to do

  1. If you haven't paid: close the tab. If the deal was real, it would exist at a shop you've heard of.
  2. If you paid by card: contact your card issuer, explain the shop is fraudulent, and ask for a chargeback. Watch the card for other charges.
  3. If you paid by bank transfer: call your bank immediately - a fast recall sometimes works.
  4. Report the ad on the platform you saw it on; it kills the campaign for other people.
